This is because Cambodia was once the seat of a yuge kingdom that controlled Thailand and South Vietnam, and that kingdom was on good terms with China. Furthermore they have always admired China and thought it was more impressive. If Cambodia at the height of its greatness felt humbled by China, it only makes sense that Cambodia in 1975 should be tightly allied with China, not like the subhuman Vietnamese.
