The most positive aspect of Germans lies in the fact that they have a relatively high average intelligence and expect a lot of their leaders and society. They look upon the things we tolerate in this regard with absolute and genuine astonishment. Despite all of the challenges, life does seem civilized there - I don’t think the US has it anywhere quite like that—neither on the coasts nor in flyover. Warmth and friendliness are a tick or two below the US (although not unpleasant), but people conduct themselves in a professional, competent way. It’s also a pretty high-trust society.
Beyond the political stuff (and I agree with your point), they are generally outraged by the disorder in the US. I remember getting a warning about riding the U-Bahn in Berlin, and I had to lol - there are scarier people on the walk from my parking spot to my office. |
