I caught it again this summer when I transferred in Munich but entered the EU from there on a new passport that I forgot to sign and the border bitch gave me a whole lecture saying how I was attempting to enter the Schengen area with an invalid travel document and that is a crime that can result in: fine, imprisonment, removal, banned from future travel. She ended up letting me sign it and pass through. Compare with the last trip I took with my wife to CDMX and she did all the talking (she always gets flustered and fucks up) and the passport control asked which city she was arriving from and she said the entirely wrong city that was not our origin or even a transfer and he just said "Did you mean ____ city instead?" and she got all nervous and said "yes" and he said "ok great welcome to Mexico!" They even have a word for it - "Neidkultur" or "jealousy culture." Not a coincidence that "Schadenfreude" comes from Germany.
The most positive aspect of Germans lies in the fact that they have a relatively high average intelligence and expect a lot of their leaders and society. They look upon the things we tolerate in this regard with absolute and genuine astonishment. Things they consider scandals that will hound a politician out of public life are a regular Tuesday here. |

Despite all of the challenges, life does seem civilized there - I don’t think the US has it anywhere quite like that—neither on the coasts nor in flyover. Warmth and friendliness are a tick or two below the US (although not unpleasant), but people conduct themselves in a professional, competent way. It’s also a pretty high-trust society.
Beyond the political stuff (and I agree with your point), they are generally outraged by the disorder in the US. I remember getting a warning about riding the U-Bahn in Berlin, and I had to lol - there are scarier people on the walk from my parking spot to my office. |
