Now, the agita is seeping into elite law schools. At top schools, first-year law students are beginning to apply to and interview with firms for summer 2026 internships. Prestige and pay—starting salaries can exceed $200,000—aren’t the only selling points. Many aspire to big-law careers at certain firms because of pro-bono work that often runs counter to the administration’s priorities, such as on immigration.

As those commitments shift, some law students say their enthusiasm for joining those firms is ebbing. Among other stipulations, the White House deals require the firms to move legal firepower to Trump priorities, like assisting veterans and law enforcement, and to disavow “illegal DEI discrimination.” Some firms have removed or renamed webpages about diversity.

First-year law students “are staring down six-figure debt, and going to work at one of these highly ranked and big-paying, big-name firms is the dream for a lot of them,” said Caleb Frye, co-president of Georgetown’s energy law group.

“On the other hand,” he said, “we’re not looking to sacrifice our moral values to do so.”
