The British Empire died in spirit when they surrendered their main base in Asia (Singapore) to the Japanese, basically without a fight. An empire has always been an expression of raw power. And when the world saw that whatever strength had once existed in the British bloodline had been spent at places like The Somme in 1916, it was pretty much over.
Churchill knew it too. After Singapore he made some comment to the effect of "if British soldiers can't fight any better than that, then we don't deserve to have an empire."
