I just removed a large, 150+ wasp colony from my portocochere

Quietly watching the harmless wasps (well I guess they're not entirely harmless if you mess with them) grow and grow. After 3 stings in the last 10 days I decided it was time to take action. I waited until my wife left for work with my three youngest children then invited my oldest out for a show. I climbed up on a ladder with a mixing bowl, a bottle of nail polish remover, and I poured some in. Then I tried to get the bowl directly over the nest. Predictably, I missed and several wasps flew off. I held the bowl there and started to hear them drop. But in the 10-20 seconds or so since the attack, the escapees started to come back. Some hung in the air inches from my hand solemnly. Others began to zoom straight at my face. I dropped the mixing bowl and it shattered upon impact with my drive. I cartwheeled back off the ladder and landed oddly on my ankle. My son rushed over to ask if I was okay, and then he started to laugh. In the end, my ankle is black and blue, the nest is gone, and I only got stung twice on the chest. My son got a morning show before school. |
