is because birdshits decided at some point that Greenwich, London had to be at the center of every map, just as Greenwich Mean Time is the timezone by which every other timezone is measured. They made that the neutral reference point for what became known as the Mercator projection. It sucks. It makes Russia and Africa look tiny. It's no more realistic than old maps from the 15th century, really. What you see is totally divorced from actual reality.

Yeah but a flat map is going to be distorted regardless of where you put the center. So the only real point of this is "in the same way". But seems better to have them all distorted in the same way then all different ones.

They could give us an array of different maps, or use them interchangeably so that people could interpolate their own sense of what the earth looks like. There's no argument for keeping it standardized like this

If you want to know “what the Earth looks like” what the hell are you looking at a 2D map projection for? At that point look at a globe or 3D model

It makes perfect sense that the mapmakers would make their home location the most accurate part of the map you schizoid shitlib. And its not like other people were prohibited from making maps where their location was the most accurate scale. English maps just became the most popular for the same reason the English language has become the most popular international language.

English mapmakers understandly prioritized accurately scaling England and those maps are the standard because the English empire was dominant when the standard was established.

Mercator is distorted towards the poles. Not longitudinally. Russia's size is exaggerated not minimized.

You seem retarded. May god have mercy on you
