Average NFL game had 5.2 TDs and 3.6 field goals in 2025 - so about 9 scores

Average premier league has 2.75 scores - so NFL has 3x as much scoring.

"field goals" are not exciting at all, not fair to include them. tds to goals is a reasonable comparison

Wrong.

The reasons field goals are relevant is because there were exciting plays before it that then are given meaning by the field goal.

Maybe there was a spectacular punt return, a 35 year old deep bomb, a running back breaking 4 tackles. You might not get the full 7 points, but you get something for those efforts. Contrast that with soccer, where even though i don't think the play is that exciting, if you are arguing that there are these amazing non-goal plays - almost none of them actually matter.

To that point, there's nothing inherently intersting about a TD or a goal either. Half of all TDs are like the least interesting play on the drive.

And half or more of soccer goals aren't that interesting - its just random bounces. You can't even see who kicked it half the time as a viewer. It's a huge negative IMO that the strategy of "the beautiful game" seems to be "let's kick the ball at someone's head and maybe it will bounce funny and go in". It's just not as strategic as a QB trying to purposefully float a ball into a 1 foot opening in the back of the end zone.

you seem to know nothing about soccer. almost every goal is exciting, moreso than most TDs, and "kick the ball at someones head at hope it will bounce funny" is not a strategy

good point. now that i think about it, watching grown men try to “kick” a ball into some defined space at the end of a field while other grown men attempt to “block” that kick is actually pretty boring.

If there were 5 goals in the median soccer match it would obviously be way more entertaining. Watching 75+ minutes of one team parking the bus is awful entertainment. The other key difference is that a football team can play it safe with a three yards in a cloud of dust offense and end up punting 8 times, and fans will complain about a team like that being boring, but most teams that do that will also pummel the opposing teams QB and have DBs that annihilate any receiver over the middle, so you usually get to watch insanely violent collisions involving 6’2” 220-250 lb dudes who run sub-4.5 40s and can bench 225 25+ times. Watching freakish athletes like that try to run into each other as violently as possible is objectively far more entertaining than 90+% of soccer matches with 3 or fewer goals, and that’s the most boring version of football.

People are not typically complaining about a 3-2 soccer match dude.

If nfl games routinely ended 0-0 with no real TD threats and maybe just a pair of missed FGs on each side, yes ppl would say that sucks ass.

I have one foot in both worlds as both a soccermo and someone who likes ppl who say soccer is for eurofags.

KFTPM is probably the worst tiebreaker in all of sports, and is indirectly largely responsible for the persistence of ties in soccer. It is "exciting" at the expense of every other thing you'd hope for in a tiebreaker, like fairness, reproducibility, rewarding the same skills that matter in the rest of the game (while trying to shake out an actual result), etc. I guess I'll add "it'll get you a result" to "exciting," but bear in mind that's true of a coin toss.

It's a tacit admission that at the highest levels of competition it's often luck that determines the champion. I'd rather have a penalty shootout than, say, a key star going down in a game 7 of a tightly contested series which unfairly rewards the opponent a championship and the extenuating circumstance is lost to asterisks and history books. Because goals in soccer are hard to score there is more overall fairness. That's just my opinion my brother, I hope you are having a blessed day.

In October 2011, in order to raise funds for several charities, including the NSPCC and Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, both clubs staged an re-enactment of the 3 April 1996 match.[34] The match was staged at Kingston Park, the home of Newcastle Falcons; many ex-Liverpool and Newcastle United players, such as Jason McAteer, Alan Shearer, Philippe Albert and Bruce Grobbelaar, participated.[34]

Another relevant stat - approximately 35% of Premier League games end up with one or both teams scoring 0 goals.

In the NFL, shutouts are 2.5%.

So in soccer you are 15X more likely to tune in and not see your team score once.

Maybe if they tripled the net length it would be more interesting idk but the soccer “plays” with three guys passing it or whatever are nothing in comparison to football plays which require the effort of the entire team

this is stupid. fans absolutely complain about nfl games with lots of long, pointless, meandering drives and constant turnovers, which is every soccer game

The NFL completely dwarfs the Premier League in U.S. viewership, with American football games drawing 10 to 40 times the audience of the most-watched soccer matches

They could make every regular soccer goal count for 6 points, and then have an extra-point penalty kick after every regular goal that counts for 1 to cut down on ties.

21-14 is considered low scoring. 3-2 soccer is very high scoring

I could hardly think of a bigger difference between sports supposedly 1 scoring play apart. Possessions are different. Scoring choices are different (point after vs 2pt conversion).

The best part of soccer was that it was a calm and enjoyable sport you could watch for 45 minutes at a time without any commercials, but now there are commercials.

btw I won $40 off my 7 year old yesterday in the South Africa vs. Canada match where both teams looked like they were farmed from the same Congo village. I took Canada for first goal and overall win $20 each. I fell asleep watching it but the score wound up being 1-0. Riveting match.
