When they captured Ukraine from the Soviets in 1941 they were greeted as liberators and cheered through the streets by the locals.

FYI Nikolayev is about to fall to the rebel advance. It is home to the only decent shipyard in Ukraine. The guided missile cruiser Ukraina is about to become Russian state property :-)
