I'm having a hard time finding words to explain how stupid someone must be to look around at the world and think it's a good idea to concentrate ever greater social, political, and military power in the hands of ever-fewer people who genuinely hate the average person

Yes, but indirectly. I guess government for now is in reality actual government persons and bodies plus a wide array of oligarchs and companies

Depending on how the AI efforts play out, we could see that status quo hold while shrinking the oligarch and company pie to those who have succeeded in AI while hiding oversight behind national security, a shift towards fewer government persons and bodies plus fewer oligarchs and companies, concentration in just a few oligarchs with government being reduced to catspaws for the oligarchs, or consolidation into an ASI that effectively wields total control

In any case, AI promises greater control by fewer people over whom there is less oversight and ultimately less ability to effectively resist or survive resistance. To support that is incredibly myopic and ill-advised

Ironically the AI oligopolists want regulation. Do you think they are acting outbof the goodness of their hearts?

There are two clear reasons for this, and neither is the headline rationale:

1. This can be a useful tactic to put up barriers behind the current entrenched powers to stymie new entrants and to consolidate control over a previously unregulated or under regulated sector.

2. They are all completely aware that one of the others may succeed, and they want to hedge against that risk and buy time to find a solution that is more likely to preserve their interests than a flat out winner-take-all race.

The motives for the calls are nearly irrelevant to the consideration of whether or not this technology will concentrate power and prune opportunities for self determination. I think we have every reason in the world to be very wary of such concentration. If we're going to irrationally race into anything, I would actually want it to be an irrationally deep embrace of self determination and limited government oversight on the individual and micro levels

As much as I want to agree with your reply, when TT says something definitive, I think there is actually sense in listening (even if we don't agree).

Not because he is the font of all wisdom, but because he tends to speak from his gut and sees so much of the world for what it is.

TT is my homie. But we're literally within a decade of the introduction of clearly transformational technology. I don't think anyone could have forecast 10 years from fire, the wheel, the automobile, the steam engine, the airplane, the transistor, the laser, the cellular phone, the [...] how the world would change, let alone use strictly contemporary examples as the limiting factors for what it can do

So I hope that Tommy forgives me for my disagreement and doesn't end our warm friendship over it, but I think he's off his fucking rocker on this one

I’m not saying it’s groundbreaking in the sense sometimes hyped, but in the working world it is impossible not to encounter it over and over, constantly. It is annoying AF. so many idiots send so much content around that they don’t understand because they didn’t write it. actual thinking and decision making is becoming more difficult because of the volume of workslop and the challenges identifying trustworthy people. It’s wild how much otherwise intelligent people are shutting off their brains because they think the robot is giving them answers and removing the anxiety and risk associated with doing the work. Youngins are the worst at this because they don’t trust themselves enough but feel confident with robot telling them what to say.

It’s a very grim future

If we had the population and cohesion of 1950s America, I'd actually vote to nationalize AI in a NASA-like program.

Because I think there is actually logic to having one "master" reasoning model built to power the application layer. But I obviously do not trust Sam Altman or Rick Moranis' twin to lead it. I do not think it should entail minting a couple permanent super billionaires (trillionaires?) as a pseudo-private company.

That said, with our current population I think it's probably better to just let them all compete and see who lands on top, even if it leads to some wacky shit in the interim.

With our current population, it would be better to have a Butlerian Jihad and wash our hands of this avenue entirely, on severe pain of torture to death and all-out-global war against any nation or group of nations that in any way pursue it

The above is not practical and would likely lead to world destruction anyway, so I do think we're in a situation where we're all just going to have to wait and see what happens. But I can't in any way say it's a good thing or is likely to have good outcomes

Right, Butlerian Jihad will unfortunately not happen anytime soon. And even in the logic of the Dune universe, it's not clear that it would happen if not for the discovery and application of Spice. Would the people of Dune's universe have really given up technology if they couldn't use magic space dust to fly space ships?

In that universe, I think they (rightly) saw it as an existential threat and affirmatively decided to turn away. Of course, you can only do that if you have some other means to survive. So it's a good question

In the real world, the siren song of greater (or even total) power, importance, legacy, immortality, etc. is too strong to be resisted by the demented people who actively seek out chances to rule others. There's no putting the genie back in the bottle absent the absolute destruction of modern society or the erasure of key technologies

TBH I do think there is actually a "better" solution in the real world. But it requires letting the debt bubble burst and having the economy restructure in such a way that the average prole can't finance an $85,000 GMC Yukon. 90%+ of the population is a slave to credit and increasingly sophisticated advertising makes it impossible for the bulk of them to resist taking on debt to consume.

If the debt bubble burst and people were technically "poorer," they'd also be more free. And work would have to be tied to actual economic needs, not just endless growth driven by debt creation.

Alas, I don't see this happening anytime soon.

How does that prevent those with wealth and/or nation states from continuing to develop the technology and keep that development from having bad outcomes?

Or are you just saying we should return to simpler life, generally, and forget the siren song of AI? If so, I wholeheartedly agree (both that we should and that it won't happen)
