“If you’re going to die, die in your own country. You don’t have to die here,” Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Thursday while opposing foreign nationals establishing private cemeteries in Thailand.
The remarks followed a crackdown on an unlicensed Jewish cemetery in Chachoengsao where four foreign nationals, including at least three Israelis, had been buried. The remains were moved to a licensed cemetery in Chonburi on Tuesday. Anutin did not identify who had submitted the new cemetery application he mentioned.
The comments echoed previous remarks targeting foreigners. As public health minister in 2020, Anutin said Western tourists who refused face masks should be expelled. A post from an account associated with him later described many farang as dressing in dirty clothes and not showering, although he denied posting it himself.
Anutin said foreigners were welcome if they obeyed the law and did not exploit or intimidate Thai people. He ordered strict enforcement in Phuket, Surat Thani and other provinces, including the deportation of foreign offenders and action against unauthorised religious sites. |
