An American in Paris was huge and still holds up. You literally couldn’t make a film like that today cause no straight man can dance like Gene Kelly. Nor can Hollywood build physical sets like that anymore. There’s an 18 minute stretch at the end with no dialogue, just dancing and whatnot. A Triumph.

80's james l. brooks movies like terms of endearment and broadcast news are incredible documents of boomerism. the way the characters behave is a bewildering peep at the boomer entitlement of the era. they are up there with The Big Chill as totemic relics of the yuppie age.

One of the reasons movies are dying is because the Oscars went from rewarding the best movies to awarding arthouse movies.

If you tell America, "you have to go see Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Titanic, Gladiator" - they're going to go and have a good time at the movies.

If you tell them, "you have to go see The Artist, The Shape of Water, Moonlight, 12 Years A Slave", they're going to realize movies are not for them.

This is exactly the attitude i'm talking about.

Pulp Fiction is a better film, and in some sense its a better movie because its not as much arthouse bullshit as a lot of the 2000 winners.

Pulp Fiction is a lot of fun so it would've been an okay winner, but Forrest Gump was an entertaining movie that was able to transport large swaths of audiences to another place (whereas 80% of movie goers would be confused or disugsted by Pulp Fiction)

there are no real "arthouse" movies except ones you haven't heard about. what you're referring to is just the deterioration of mainstream adult drama, which has become so impoverished and irrelevant that it's mistaken for arthouse because mainstream drama can't possibly be so impoverished and irrelevant.

there are still blockbuster movies but they are either juvenile marvel movies designed to satisfy the increasingly juvenile populous, or a sequel, or done in an unserious way like the odyssey. "good will hunting" is "arthouse" in the same way you describe modern drama, the issue with modern drama is that you couldn't make good will hunting today without it being about a race or gender issue or about psychological disorders and past traumas instead of it just being a frank and honest depiction of life. so everything that would ever possibly be considered for an oscar is unmemorable shit.

It's all an arthouse mentality now.

Good Will Hunting had a bigger budget then most movies "adult" movies do now.

More importantly, Good Will Hunting was a traditional story, with a 3-act structure and character development, conflicts, and resolution meant to appeal to adults.

Now every movie is transgressive, with non-traditional narratives, and open ended plots. Anora is a great example of this. Anora in many ways to me, is the most narratively traditional Oscar winner in recent years - yet the Cinderella story meanders for most of it and then ends with her crying while having sex with a hitman.

We used to live in a world where we'd get 5 movies a week like Anora in the theater, and the plot would be more cohesive, and it would end in a cinematiclaly satisfying way that your grandma would enjoy (rather than her crying having sex in a car recoutning her trauma).

Best Picture winners have always been 50/50 as to whether they have any staying power. hell you can look back at best selling books from 1880 and you've never heard of most of them. nothing new under the sun
