Very politically savvy cardinals note major events, eg the Port Huron statement, MLK’s assassination, but also the Opening to the Left in Italy, as the start of a significant socio-political turn for the West, correctly forecasting the rise of New Left and neoliberal adoption by Western governments in the context of the Cold War alongside anti-colonial fervor prevailing and re-ordering society in the third world. Seeking to inoculate themselves from attacks based on the leading role the church played in 17th-19th century colonial aggression by European powers and its inaction in the face mass suffering and complicity with axis powers in WWII, and noting the threats faced by Catholics in the Communist spheres of influence in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America the Church decides that a modernization and liberalization event that’s widely publicized, prolonged, and celebrated by left-facing/accepted surrogates is the Church’s wisest path in efforts to retain its wealth and social influence. And one must admit it worked perfectly for a while and its legacy to this day can be seen in Catholics’ 6+/3- majority control of the highest and most authoritative law making branch of the most powerful country in the world.
