The reason all of our maps of the earf are distorted the exact same way

They made that the neutral reference point for what became known as the Mercator projection. It sucks. It makes Russia and Africa look tiny. It's no more realistic than old maps from the 15th century, really. What you see is totally divorced from actual reality.
