Do you know why Nirvana was so much more famous than the Pixies or the Melvins? Because Kurt took the concept of grunge, the idea and aesthetic of grunge, and he combined it with nursery rhyme melodies and clever as fuck lyrics. That's why Nirvana is huge and The Buzzcocks are not. Hardcore bands are niche because most people don't want to hear that. Katy Perry songs are written by the most talented songwriters in the world. You could have thrown in bands like Death Cab, The Shins, Animal Collective. AF had three good albums and dropped off heavily. Radiohead were on their downward trajectory by that point but still had a few masterpieces left in them (very rare for any band). I'd probably agree that stuff is overall better than mall emo but the best mall emo bands were right behind em. Then you can get into arguments about when FOB and Panic sold out and dropped off. But the kind of people who are into The Specials generally moved on/branched out by the late 80s and always rolled their eyes at the decade-younger-sibling-aged cohort who liked Reel Big Fish. Also the mid 80s DC stuff was 90% a reaction/rebound boyfriend level phase of a scene that was consciously aware in the moment that its prior phase of hardcore bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat had risen to heights where kids would hear their music for decades afterward. It was mostly the same people in slightly different band configurations conspicuously “trying to go in a different direction” and “challenge their fans/scene” v making more music that resembled or further developed the bands that dominated and shaped US punk and hardcore in the late 70s/early 80s.
