It's not like Ireneas didn't study directly under Polycarp or Ignatius of Antioch wasn't appointed by Peter.
and as to scriptural authority...
i would say it would be fruitful to think about why a bible exists at all and why it was compiled and where and for what explicit stated purpose...in short. why is there a bible at all? see where it takes you and enjoy the journey.
