Date: July 23rd, 2026 1:50 AM Author: soul-stirring fortuitous meteor field didn't watch this but here's what will actually happen: big firms will slowly implode and become glorified lobbyists, to the extent that isn't already the business model. midlaw expands for big ticket litigation but is less lucrative and the overall market contracts. niche practices like IP and patent and high level tax will survive as thriving practices but way less lucrative without the overall legal market constantly ratcheting up billables for all legal services. more lawyers will be striver 'dual expertise' types with STEM creds and the ability to represent to clients that they know how to maximally leverage AI in niche representation to superior results, not just use it to control costs.
shitlaw will be change much less and may be much better. AI briefing is a godsend to all the hustler types in family law, plaintiff's bar, and crim law who are better marketers than attorneys. unless civil society fundamentally changes soon, people will not accept courtroom 'justice' that does not involve people. stuff like labor law and employment law will still require lawyers, just fewer. those practice areas will cluster and band together for survival as the money dwindles and individuals will rotate sides to regulators fore credibility like securities lawyers always have.
anyway it all amounts to the winners are the rainmaking partners who were already born on third base in this legal market and state flagship grad prosecutor type assholes who can't read good but are skilled at talking to people. |
