Jock Ewing was the original ScumJock, the Patriarch, the land-taking oil brute who beat men directly, took what he wanted and let money age the whole ugly business into legend. Then his two sons split the inheritance.

Bobby, J.R.’s younger brother, got the Jock half. Handsome, physical, direct, naturally liked, able to walk into a room and command it without first destroying somebody’s credit. He could punch J.R., condemn J.R., leave the ranch in disgust and remain the beloved son because that is Jock privilege. The body, the confidence, the automatic legitimacy.

J.R. got the Scummy impulse but became Prep Clique. He put Jock’s dirt in a suit. Jock took your oil field. J.R. called your banker, read your contract, slept with your relative and arranged matters so you thanked him on the way out.

They were brothers but they were hardly the same species. Bobby inherited the force and somehow kept the innocence. J.R. inherited the filth and learned to administer it.

J.R. had spent the season scheming, backstabbing, philandering, gutting his partners, turning every relationship into leverage and every rule into a weapon. Shooting him appeared reasonable af for numerous Suspects.
