the vast majority of winners in the 21st century. even solid films like hurt locker and argo. are they really that memorable and withstand the test of time?
i'm not even talking about shit like crash and 12 yrs a slave. the good winners arent even that great.

One of the reasons movies are dying is because the Oscars went from rewarding the best movies to awarding arthouse movies.
If you tell America, "you have to go see Forrest Gump, Braveheart, Titanic, Gladiator" - they're going to go and have a good time at the movies.
If you tell them, "you have to go see The Artist, The Shape of Water, Moonlight, 12 Years A Slave", they're going to realize movies are not for them.

This is exactly the attitude i'm talking about.
Pulp Fiction is a better film, and in some sense its a better movie because its not as much arthouse bullshit as a lot of the 2000 winners.
Pulp Fiction is a lot of fun so it would've been an okay winner, but Forrest Gump was an entertaining movie that was able to transport large swaths of audiences to another place (whereas 80% of movie goers would be confused or disugsted by Pulp Fiction)

It's all an arthouse mentality now.
Good Will Hunting had a bigger budget then most movies "adult" movies do now.
More importantly, Good Will Hunting was a traditional story, with a 3-act structure and character development, conflicts, and resolution meant to appeal to adults.
Now every movie is transgressive, with non-traditional narratives, and open ended plots. Anora is a great example of this. Anora in many ways to me, is the most narratively traditional Oscar winner in recent years - yet the Cinderella story meanders for most of it and then ends with her crying while having sex with a hitman.
We used to live in a world where we'd get 5 movies a week like Anora in the theater, and the plot would be more cohesive, and it would end in a cinematiclaly satisfying way that your grandma would enjoy (rather than her crying having sex in a car recoutning her trauma).
