And also the reason the entire thing "worked" to begin with is they based the entire thing on the assumption that the Universe is "smooth" based on the idea that if you zoom far enough out it's true, but then every time a new "void" was found because they built a bigger telescope they would just move the "far enough" line further back. Until it turns out that we are probably sitting in the middle of a giant void where the light is being "stretched" in ways that aren't being accounted for.
