Wild Turkey didn't have many labels that got super popular during the bourbon boom. As such they were able to use older stock in their flagship products much more, whereas others didn't or removed age statements (e.g. Elijah Craigh). As whiskey got more popular and people began seeing how much of a value WT101 is sales surged, and thus the newer stuff is getting younger. So yeah you're not wrong in noticing. Still great shit though.

I picked out two barrels of WT with Eddie Russell! Released one as rare breed and one as kentucky spirit.

Kentucky Spirit (and all WT bourbons) come from the same mashbill, same distillation process, etc. They just select the best and most interesting barrels for KS and RB. Just like now WT101 tastes younger because the oldest stuff is going into premium products, so are the honey barrels.

All that to say: don't write WT101 off forever. It's "the same" as KS, just a blend. When supply catches up with demand, or demand for premium stuff fades, more of the barrels that would have been KS will be dumped into 101 blends.

I have! It's good stuff. I believe they're still sourcing from Beam and I've never really loved their stuff, so I don't get it often. Purely a subjective preference, their yeast strain has a peanut butter taste I don't like enjoy, but objectively it's good shit. If you like Bookers and Knob Creek I'd be reaching for the Costco shit every time.
