It's like watching the WNBA or minor league. No one wants to watch the B players, and we especially don't want to watch them lose.
I think we should have a Manhattan project where we draft 5% of the top athletic talent into soccer. Not even flame. Giving a handful of elite athletic prospects a government stipend would only cost a few million a year and by 2030 we'd have a competitive world cup team. |

Date: July 15th, 2026 2:05 PM Author: Supple Stubborn Location Travel Guidebook i disagree about athletic talent going to other sports because the other major sports in the US cater to vastly different body types. there's no way someone who is 5'9 and 150 pounds is making it in the nba or nfl. even if they bulk up to 170 and trade muscle and power for endurance while maintaining athleticism, there just isn't a place for them in the top american sports. and that size is the prototypical soccer player. sure there are plenty of 6' to 6'4 soccer players too but every top team is full of the shorter guys with a goalie, center backs and strikers being the exception.
i agree with the manhattan project but its goal should be to subsidize soccer training from a young age and get tons more kids playing. soccer is still primarily a middle class sport in the us that quickly costs a lot of money by the time kids are 10+. we need more hungry kids from the ghetto/barrio playing and get chances to KEEP playing through age 18. |
