The movement of young people in China choosing to "lay low" is known as tang ping ("lying flat"; 躺平) and its more extreme evolution, bai lan ("letting it rot"; 摆烂). These viral, counterculture social movements represent a silent protest against intense societal pressures, hyper-competitive work environments, and a bleak economic outlook.
Core Philosophies
• Tang Ping (Lying Flat): Originating in 2021, this mindset involves doing only the bare minimum required to survive. Adherents actively reject corporate overwork, opt out of consumerism, and refuse traditional life milestones like marriage, purchasing property, or having children.
• Bai Lan (Letting it Rot): Emerging shortly after tang ping, this term describes a more pessimistic attitude of actively embracing a deteriorating situation. When young people feel social mobility is entirely unattainable, they decide to "let it rot" rather than waste energy trying to fix an impossible situation.
