Tow truck buddy of mine made $300K last year. Most of it tax free

He makes his own hours too. Sounds like a great gig.

He should parlay that into YouTube or TikTok fame

Probably tons of kooky situations that could go viral. If he has a good narrator voice can build up a consistent audience too.

Junkyards yes, but he says he often gets cash from the car owners in return for not towing the car. People are very willing to go to an ATM to get cash to avoid being towed. It saves him time too and he can go right on to the next car and repeat process.

who employs him, the city? don't they catch onto him not towing who he's told to tow? how often is the car owner nearby to catch him ahead of time?

He works for himself. He has contracts with apartment complexes and commercial lots. He has to turn a % of each car towed over to them so him taking cash is best outcome.

the gas, wear-and-tear, and time saved make it a no-brainer, even if he's taking a 50% cut on the portion of the impound fee he receives, probably not more than 50% of the daily rate. Figure about $150/tow maybe. $75 to drop the car is worth it since there's always another one nearby. But he's probably getting at least $150 to drop the car.

aside from getting crowbarred in the face, this seems like an honest profession.

most guys doing anything that warrants a tow are going to bve fucking assholes and exactly the type of person you want to punish

He’s mainly in gentrified urban areas that have way too little parking and all sorts of restrictions.
