Green Day had like 4 distinct periods of popularity. First as a beloved indie punk band, then as the face of the American punk revival with their first 2 major record releases, then appealing to a wider audience with nimrod.

They kind of fell off for a while after that and it seemed like they were done for until releasing American Idiot which is at worst their 2nd most popular album.

Isn’t this basically all bands? The find their voice then release their best stuff then just keep on going with mediocre new shit no one wants to hear.

Some of them take a huge dive or sell out so bad that it’s ignominious. Weezer is a good example of this.

Weezer is the best example. 2 GOAT tier albums followed by generic, unlistenable trash.

Yeah i guess most other bands it's more a gradual thing. A creative spurt in the early years of the band followed by less successful attempts to recapture the magic.

what Weezer did in the later years was worse than just generic. iirc Rivers was namedropping "Timbaland" and other pop star fly-by-nights in his tracks and trying to cultivate some kind of Loser Icon status in sleazy Hollywood board rooms. It was embarrassing.

All of them. Once your generation loses cultural relevance it doesn't matter how talented you are, your aesthetic loops back like a haunted echo that hits as "cringe" instead of 180

This bigly depends on the type of music you set out to make and then make. Not all artists chase a cultural moment and the ones who don’t can stay at the top of their game much longer, maybe indefinitely.
