Irene Montero kicks words around and invents a new ethnic group: "The browns"

Irene Montero has given another kick to the Spanish language and invented a new ethnic group this Saturday at a meeting of the Podemos political party: "The browns."

Stated Montero, "We hope to sweep away the fascists and the racists of this nation with migrants and workers. Yes, I want them to be replaced. Replace the fascists; the racists; replace them with vibrancy; we can replace them with the workers of this country regardless of skin color, whether they be Asian, black, brown, all of our comrades, the working classes of Spain."

Montero, a Member of the European Parliament for Podemos, made the statement during a party rally this Saturday during the electoral campaign for the upcoming Aragón presidency vote on February 8th.

At the same event, Irene Montero spoke of "sweeping" Spain of right-wing voters with an army of illegal immigrants. Her polemic comes in the midst of polls whose numbers suggest victory for PP candidate Jorge Azcón, along with a notable rise in support for Vox.

Irene Montero - MEP and local party secretary - appeared together with deputy and general secretary Ione Belarra, with María Goikoetxea (candidate for the Podemos-Green alliance for the presidency of Aragón), Huesca party head José Ángel Pérez Marcuello, federal Green alliance coordinator Juantxo López de Uralde, and Canal Red reporter Laura Arroyo.

The government of Pedro Sánchez announced this past Monday (January 26th) that 500,000 illegal immigrants would be legalized by decree which allowed Congressional action to be bypassed. This extraordinary amnesty of foreigners in Spain is part of a pact between Sánchez and Podemos. This royal decree is the route by which Sánchez avoids the Congress of Deputies, where he does not have a majority.

Sánchez announced the amnesty minutes after MEP and Podemos party secretary Irene Montero announced an accord with PSOE to legalize approximately half-a-million illegal immigrants. This measure was also demanded by the Sumar party, another Sánchez coalition partner.

Since entering politics, Irene Montero has distinguished herself by her blunders, among them:

"Bodies and security forces" - In an interview with Onda Cero in 2019, Irene Montero referred to state security forces and bodies (fuerzas y cuerpos de seguridad) as bodies and forces (cuerpas y fuerzos) of security.

"Spokeswoman" - In February 2018, Irene Montero used the term spokeswoman ("portavoza") in place of the gender-neutral term "portavoz." Days afterwards, she justified her invention of this term, claiming that it emphasized the importance of women acting as spokespeople. Afterwards, the Spanish grammar group Fundéu recommended the usage of 'vocera' for cases in which the feminine identity of a spokesperson was being emphasized. 'Vocera' is in common use in Latin America.

"Members"/"Miembras" - Montero's use of the term 'miembras' in place of 'miembros' (members) was defended by then-PSOE deputy Adriana Lastra: "It is preferable to the use of the expression 'miembros y miembras." The term was introduced in 2008 by social equality minister Bibiana Aído.
