After college wasn’t ready for real world so took LSAT and GRE and did a joint JD/MPA program at my good but not elite state school. Always interested in politics and policy, like most lawyers, but didn’t really care about practicing. Tuition was cheap enough with family help and a scholarship I had little debt.

Graduated in 4 years and got one of those PMF federal government jobs. Worked in policy then transitioned to a legal role at an agency and then on the Hill. Eventually left for a trade association and now lead lobbying for a member of that association.

400k-ish comp depending on bonus each year.

do you use legistorm for contact data? if not do you manage contacts in-house of all the staffers.

Are there still DC firms that are quasi-firms/quasi-lobbyists and are they influential in the broader GA world or no?

So do you have an easier/clearer path if you started at one of those firms instead of a generic V10 in NYC or SF/SV?

For my industry no one will be impressed by random corporate V10 work; you need government experience and relevant private sector work, so it would be better working in an industry-related practice group at a V100 at the start of your career

what is lobbying? do you offer congressmen blowjobs and giftbaskets if they agree to pay you 6 million shekels as part of a defense omnibus bill

A lot of it is taking a company SME and having them meet with a staffer from an office working on a bill to convince them to edit/retain/do something that we think is advantageous

same thing with regulatory agencies, usually meetings and comment letters

At the state level there's a lot of managing contract lobbyists in the 50 states and engaging state legislators or regulators

This idea that we just give them money, personal money, to do things is crazy

why the heck would anybody want to meet you or help you

is the idea that all your employees will vote for the politician if a particular result is acheived

Outcomes and KPIs, like any job.

How much revenue have we saved or earned is a big one but quite challenging

We have metrics we can track on our brand recognition which is in part thanks to GR work

There's process measures like number of meetings, bills, etc.
