Usually played for bad teams and didn't have a great W-L record. Boomer voters were all about W-L.

But he also never led the league in pitching WAR so even by modern standards, he never "deserved" to win the CYA.

I'm just saying, by boomer standards (W-L record), he didn't get it, and by modern standards (WAR), you can't say he deserved to win either.

Ryan was the quintessenial Boomer though…hung around forever, got into fights, challenged hitters instead of nibbling (hence his high K numbers). I’m kind of surprised they never threw him a bone or gave him a sort of “lifetime achievement” Cy Young.

i think he got dinged for being wild as fuck. he pitched during an era when people threw strikes and finessed hitters into groundouts.

thought this was flame, got confused with fat ass roger clemens...jfc nolan really didnt win a single one

he had back to back years where he won 21 and 22 games with over 350 strike outs each year and ERA arnd 2.87 and he only got 2nd and 3rd in cy young

He gave up a lot of walks, and played for a lot of bad teams. But his strikeouts and no hitters records will probably stand forever. A 180 pitcher and probably would've won a CY or two if he played for a big market team for most of his career

1973 was maybe his best shot at a Cy Young. Ryan had a higher WAR than Jim Palmer, who won the Cy Young that year. However, there were 3 other guys (Blyleven, Hiller and Perry) with a higher WAR than either one of them.

1977 was similar. Ryan had a higher WAR than CYA winner Sparky Lyle (a reliever), but Frank Tanana (who got no first-place votes at all) had a higher WAR than both of them.

I look at Nolan kinda like John Daly. I don't care if Gary Player has more majors. John Daly is a badass and Player is a pussy

can make a great argument for '87. led starters in hits allowed, got the walks under control, led the league in era, blew out all the competition in strikeouts. win-loss record kinda fucked him. finished t-5 and the award went to a closer.

Is there a statistical method to control for starting for a shitty team? Like a way to estimate win loss record if he was on another team?

you can just go by war which is agnostic to that. but kinda weird that he led the league in fip but was only 5th in war. the war calculation is way too wonky to intuit.

How does WAR or FIP treat walks? Because that seems to be Nolan's weakness

fip dings you for walks and fip is an input of war, broadly speaking

control was a major problem early but he became average enough by the end of his career

It's such bullshit when relievers win it. But still, it looks like a number of other guys had better seasons.

could argue that he had the best year of any starter that year if you hold your hand over the war column

And the W-L column. No starter has ever won the CYA with a losing record. It's honestly amazing he got any votes at all from the 1987 writers.

Ryan was the “prole goy Mr. Fix-It” of star pitchers. Not Cy Young caliber.

great pitcher but honestly he never had a season where he clearly deserved it. As dude said above, with his crappy w/l record he was particularly ill equipped to win the CY in the era he pitched in. His ERA wasn't that good either. It looks low by modern standards but his career ERA+ is only 112, so 12% better than league average. Tom Seaver's was 127.
