Weird and false. There is usually a priest who maintains an office and position of authority in the religion department and as of the late 90s/early 00s it was still very common for that priest to also take a keen interest in the most troubled kids, especially the ones with lean, lithe bodies and very youthful skin. I’d like to think that they crack down on that kind of thing now, but knowing the sociopath closet cases that the U.S. Catholic Church tends to attract and maintain loyalty from I am highly skeptical that a motivated priest who maintains a position of authority with a Catholic school would not be able to lean on a couple admin figures enough to get approval for his “youth group” meeting after school.

Ha I know a girl with the exact same job at my old high school. Other than the massive collapse in church revenues the big issue is on the east coast is the flight of families with school aged kids to farther flung exburbs. So where you used to have a school in an inner ring suburb that was on the subway line and had more profile (and therefore got more support from) the archdiocese in the city, now that school is closed and the parish connected to it is 80+% retirees at mass every Sunday. Our school had enough of an athletics profile to just say fuck it and move out to the exburbs while they also 7x’d tuition over the last 25 years. I give them credit for seeing the trends and problems early, but it is kind of hilarious that the answer ended up being “fuck the church, we worship football and basketball now.”

I did jr high at one in a shitty east coast city (think poughkeepsie, allentown, trenton, hempstead). a lot of kids went there to avoid the city schools. we had a good basketball team if you know what I mean.
smaller enrollment was annoying as everyone knew everyones business. nice part was getting friends from outside your neighborhood. overall the tuition was cheap so the school was underfunded and looked like shit.
I always tell people that there is a big difference between a private school (a bmw) and a catholic school (a honda civic with rims).

HSs are struggling but chugging along
My K-8 shut down a while back
That surprised me, because the composition of my local community shouldn't have changed
