I have been in biglaw for less than 6 years, but I can see lasting 20 because I lucked into a niche area where I can rely heavily on my knowledge in this narrow area of the law and recycle my old work with moderate modifications.

Don't want to get into specifics, but I do the same thing the partner I work for does, and our clients are large corporations who seem happy with the end result.
So I'm not losing any sleep over our billing practices.

One thing- it helps a lot if you're one of those people who don't need a lot of sleep and naturally have a lot of mental endurance. I used to play WoW a lot, and whenever a new expansion was released, I would always pull all-nighters and end up as one of the first on my server to reach max level. Not as any kind of a goal, just was the natural way I played.
In times when work gets especially busy, I do sometimes find myself working at home til 3 am or so, getting a few hours of sleep and then doing the same thing the next night. Doesn't really affect me as long as it's not too many weeks in a row like that.

1. Biglaw is not a uniform experience.
2. It gets easier when you know the drill. Even fire drills and other emergencies become routine because you’ve seen literally everything. That makes it a lot less stressful.
3. When you are senior you can have other people do stuff for you. That means you are more in control of own time

The area I practice in is so narrow that I'd be totally fucked if it suddenly went away. That's both a good and bad side of biglaw. My firm operates at such volume that they can allow my partner and me to handle this tiny area of the law and become quite expert at it. And now I can do my job largely on cruise control, secure in the knowledge that few other lawyers have expertise in this area.
But if I hadn't done a couple of federal clerkships I'd barely have any general practical legal knowledge at all. I try to stay up to speed on the federal stuff in case all this goes away. And also so I can feel like a lawyer at all instead of some narrow legal technician.

What part of "generous six figure income" do you not understand?
See people whine about BIGLAW all the time but don't think there's any other profession where a pure grinder can grind his way so quickly into a fat six fig income.
