No they weren't.
There was no chance GB was going to jump into a war against the U.S. for cotton when they were already receiving a large amount from India. Not to mention that slavery was WILDLY unpopular amongst the GB population. There would have been no upside to sending British troops to go die in a foreign country AND PISS OFF A MAJOR TRADING PARTNER at the same time.
France wasn't going to step foot on American soil without GB going along with them.
Then there is also the fact that neither GB nor France would dedicate troops and boats to go fight for slavery on the other side of the world when Germany was rising in power right on their doorstep. |

100 confederate soldiers were only equal to roughly 170-190 union soldiers, though, and the union's numerical advantage allowed them to throw wave after wave of canon fodder into the meat grinder and overwhelm the rebs. The union slaughter of civilians then inflated the total southern death toll, which ultimately ended up being over half that of the North, which is a shame. |
