He explained this way: in a sandbox game, “you should be able to do wicked things” to give players maximum freedom and choice.
He originally wanted players to have affairs and even break up existing NPC marriages to create more dramatic storylines
Right now in Stardew Valley you can already: -Date and marry any of the romanceable villagers -Get caught and face jealousy/relationship penalties if you date multiple people at once -Divorce your spouse (with some consequences and a wait period)
But there is no built-in mechanic for infidelity while married. The potential new feature would expand the relationship system further.
