FORMER NEW JERSEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER PLEADS GUILTY IN CHILD SEX ABUSE CASE AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO 13-YEAR-OLD BOY’S CHILD

A former Cape May County elementary school teacher has pleaded guilty in a disturbing child sexual abuse case involving a former student who allegedly was just 11 years old when the abuse began.

Laura Caron, 36, of Cape May Court House, pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child involving sexual contact.

Caron was a fifth-grade teacher in the Middle Township School District and had taught both the victim and his younger brother.

According to investigators, Caron became close friends with the children’s mother, and the siblings frequently stayed overnight at her home before eventually moving in permanently.

The victim’s siblings told detectives they would sometimes wake up to find their brother sleeping in Caron’s bed.

On April 5, 2019, Caron gave birth to a child when she was 28 and the boy was just 13 years old.

The case came to light years later after the boy’s father posted a photograph of the child on Facebook, questioning the striking family resemblance.

The post ultimately prompted an investigation.

According to court documents, the victim’s sister provided investigators with a text message in which her brother acknowledged being the child’s father but asked her not to tell anyone because he did not want Caron to get in trouble.

The victim, now 20, previously told investigators the relationship continued until 2020.

Under the plea agreement, Caron faces five years in prison, forfeiture of her teaching license, and a permanent ban on public employment.

She will also be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law and be subject to lifetime supervision.

Caron is scheduled for sentencing on January 8, pending a court-ordered evaluation that could affect her sentence and placement.
