President Donald Trump still thinks Ted Cruz could be a Supreme Court justice.

During a speech in Washington this week with Cruz in the audience, Trump called the Houston Republican a “brilliant legal mind” who he could easily get approved through the U.S. Senate for the nation’s highest court.

"If I nominate him for the U.S. Supreme Court, I will get 100% of the vote,” Trump said. “The Democrats will vote for him because they want to get him the hell out. And the Republicans will vote for him because they want to get him the hell out too.”

That last line produced laughter, but Trump has floated the idea more seriously before. In 2020, during his reelection campaign, Trump listed Cruz among 20 potential picks he would nominate for the Supreme Court in a second term. And just a few weeks ago, Trump told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt that Cruz would make a good justice.

Cruz has consistently shot down the idea of going to the court, despite his history. Cruz was a law clerk for then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist from 1996 to 1997, and later, as the Texas solicitor general, he argued cases at the Supreme Court. Cruz told ABC News years ago that he had an oil painting made of him arguing a case before the court because of how important it was too him.

Cruz was with Trump on Wednesday because the White House was holding an event to tout its new "Trump Accounts" to the public. That program will give $1,000 to parents of newborns to invest in the stock market. Families, friends and businesses would be able to add to those accounts, like a 401k savings account, except these won't have the same tax benefits, to build up the fund for when the child turns 18. At that point, they would be able to use the money to buy a home, start a business or help pay for school.

While they are being called Trump accounts, it was Cruz who got the legislation through Congress and then added to Trump’s big tax cut and spending bill in 2025.

Cruz originally called his bill the Invest America Act, but the House renamed it the “money account for growth and advancement.” The acronym would be MAGA Accounts. In the final passage, the name Trump Accounts was put on the program.

No matter what they are called, Cruz said the goal is to connect young Americans with the U.S. Stock Market, where they will have an appreciation for one of the things he said makes America great.

“This provision will create an entire generation of capitalists,” Cruz told me in an exclusive interview on the Texas Take podcast last summer.
