this kind of shit seems to be rampant in these communities.
I recently had a case (that I thankfully withdrew from before the shit hit the fan), where my client got sued by a corporation based on asia. My client was asian, same nationality as where this company was from.
My client owned several decently sized mcmansions locally that he entered into a lease agreement with a rep from the company to lease several of them to the company for corporate housing for the company employees for their US office here.
However, somehow (and i as the lawyer never figured out how) the lease that was submitted to the company in asia was altered, so that the company was paying double rent and security deposit than the original lease. Like $3000 to $6000 kind of stuff, way overpriced for the part of town. The company paid this inflated amount for several years, and then sued once it found out about the fraud.
Also, one of the "employees" of the company that was living here was friends with my client (the landlord), and they had some arrangement where my client would kick him back about $1300/mo of this excess. So an employee of the company was in on the fraud. That employee no longer works at the company either
Then I caught my client repeatedly lying to me about the lease and the money and the kickbacks, and wanted me to make material misrepresentations to the other side about what was going on.
Once I found out about this, I withdrew. But he seemed to think that this was no big deal at all.
Also the young solo attorney that picked up the case after me is getting absolutely ass raped in court, Im still on the efile and get filings for this. Like orders to compel, sanctions against the lawyer, etc
