In his filing, McKinsey accused Jang of being abusive during medical procedures related to his transition. In one instance, he alleged Jang tried to pull medical tubes from his body shortly after a procedure.

McKinsey also alleged Jang’s father, who was not named in the filing, punched him in the chest while he was recovering from double mastectomy surgery.

In one instance, she alleged McKinsey hit one of her sons in the face during an argument over Legos, leaving a “very large bruise the shape of a handprint” on his face, according to a restraining order that the woman sought against McKinsey.

The trans New York Times executive who was allegedly killed by his in-laws was once pregnant with a son who died shortly after he was born, according to court documents — in a loss he blamed on his wife.

In a court filing from December 2025, reviewed by the California Post, Jonathan McKinsey described the pregnancy and alleged abuse he suffered from his estranged wife Candice Jang.

“I was terrified of Candice hurting me or the baby, but had nowhere to go and limited options, as a pregnant transgender man,” he said, according to a filing.

McKinsey, 40, was allegedly fatally shot by Candice’s parents Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, who took turns shooting him. The incident allegedly happened in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Ground in the Bay Area on Sept. 26.

Zhang and Chen were charged with murder and remain in jail without bail. They’ve yet to be sentenced, but could face life in prison without parole if convicted.

More than a decade before the alleged killing, McKinsey apparently became pregnant with an embryo that was created from Candice’s IVF treatment, as first reported by the Daily Mail.

McKinsey had at first suggested the couple use his own eggs, but Candice allegedly said she didn’t want to have a child with his “f—ed up genetics”, according to McKinsey’s court statements.

At the time, in Nov. 2014, he was a full-time graduate student at UC Berkeley and a part-time teaching assistant.

“While I was pregnant, Candice regularly started fights with me because she was jealous that I was carrying the baby,” McKinsey alleged in his court declaration.

“She forced me to sleep on the futon in our living room, while she slept in the bed. On one occasion, she threw a cup at me and hit me in my stomach.”

McKinsey said he and Candice eventually moved from Berkeley to San Jose in early 2015 and he started suffering from severe nausea at 22 weeks pregnant.

“Despite us having hired movers, Candice forced me to move heavy boxes during the move,” he wrote. “Once the move was completed, I noticed that I had started bleeding.”

As he went to the hospital to get things checked, McKinsey claimed Candice kept berating him.

“While Candice drove me to the emergency room, she screamed at me repeatedly and told me to ‘shut up,’ when I expressed I was in pain,” he said.

Their son Romeo Preston McKinsey was born, but he only survived for less than an hour, according to court documents.

“I am confident that being forced to move the heavy boxes triggered my premature labor and ultimately caused the death of our son,” McKinsey said.

The alleged terror McKinsey faced during his 2015 pregnancy wasn’t the only he said he had horrific encounters with Candice.

In Aug. 2013, the couple also had an argument involving a frying pan and dead cockroach.
