An $830-a-month car payment. Auto insurance for $280 each month. Thousands more for tire and maintenance repairs.

For almost three years, those bills have followed Davine Greene, a nursing student who hasn’t missed or been late on a payment since buying her Kia K5 GT in November 2023. But keeping up with the payments has driven up her debt to more than $80,000, not including student loans.

Last week, she filed for bankruptcy to escape the burden, she said.

“This car is the bane of my existence,” said Ms. Greene, 24, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “Probably the worst decision I’ve ever made, like, financially speaking.”

The best move would probably be to make it illegal to loan any real amount of money to most people. Imagine declaring bankruptcy because you decided to buy a Kia K5. lol just wtf.

the system is kind of fucked, but this extreme shittiness is the only reason why anyone does anything. if you didn't have some acquaintance who bombed OCI and self-treated with opiates or whose entire working career is dedicated to paying for Cars to drive to work, you wouldn't be happy as a clam with what should otherwise be considered mediocre life outcomes. you're a Non-Equity Partner probably but you're still like "i maed it." even if you have Equity still you'd be like "wow Im Gen X and not homeless. far out!"

just cap interest rates at whatever we decide is usury. this is common sense and enshrined in the most ancient laws we have. amazing we've eliminated this so that proles can have the "freedom" to be exploited for $800/mo kia loans.

there's just too much information out there that allows the producers of necessary things like cars to maximize the cost in a way that eats up every dollar of most peoples incomes.

it's all driven by monthly payments. Lower interests are great! now the manufacturer can just jack up the MSRP. higher interest rates? ok let's just offer 10 year loans.

automakers offer below market rates as incentives all the time. capping interest rates would not lead to higher msrps except for nissan that makes a lot of money off scumbag lending. plus people use non-dealer financing all the time, so automakers can't reliably recoup via financing.

Totally agree. Access to credit drives up prices IMO. Less ability to extend credit to any idiot that shows up at a dealer would lead to people seeking out cheaper cars (instead of trying to "flex") and it would force automakers to start making cheaper vehicles again. I think a big part of why sedans are "dying" is because of the type of credit that companies can extend to consumers who have no business borrowing tens of thousands of dollars.

Almost certain that she traded in a previous car that she was underwater on and she rolled the negative equity into the new loan. So she had a loan whose value was significantly more than the absolute dog shit car she bought.

When I was extremely poor I just took after the uberproles and drove horrible Scummy as fuck cars. There were $2995 cars everywhere. This Kia doesn't seem that expensive even, $27k and probably has fewer problems than some 1990s bullshit head gasket fuck you mobile. If it breaks just Engineer a solution. stop leak. head gasket. engine replacement from a Junkyard with ferocious dogs running around.

After splitting time between Las Vegas and Texas, he settled in Houston in 2023. But he had hourlong work commutes and was driving for DoorDash and Uber for extra income, which quickly raised the gas bill and mileage on his 2016 Chevy Sonic. He is also holding on to a 2015 Chevy Camaro.

Mr. Rhodes has decided to pause his ride-hailing and delivery work and is focusing only on hairstyling.

“I remember being younger, and you could just buy a car outright and keep it rolling,” Mr. Rhodes said. “Now there’s these high payments. It’s just crazy.”

----

NYT is just "Daily Mail for Libs" at this point, pretty solidly disguised ragebait. "Why doesn't this fucking NIG-I mean, down on his luck citizen just sell the Camaro?" the lib wondered to zhimzelf.

Tbf it is an insane expense for poors who, if white, cannot afford to live in cities with public transit that aren’t Cleveland or worse. And if you’re poor you need to work and if you live in some horrible US nowhere place you need to drive or get a Ride. I’m convinced the incredibly shortsighted and stupid investment in automobile infrastructure will be the ultimate downfall of North America.

OYT what are you even talking about. this is such a liberal idea. "the automobile" is retarded but the lib obsession with it is telling. you just hate any manifestation of personal freedom.

personal freedom, and this is the part people don't say out loud until it's too late, results in dumbs doing Extremely Dumb Things and then suffering the consequences and also their children suffering the consequences. my question to you is, why is this bad? sufferers of intergenerational trauma driving 2003 pontiac grand ams on their 20th owner.... how the fuck else are you going to find someone who isn't an immigrant to work at a slaughterhouse or a wal mart? the system demands Ruin and Scum as grist for the mill. weird to think that modernity had only really sort of "existed" for a few short decades when we were born, and that the whole perspective was different back then. but today you can look at some Scummy kid building Character and be like "his grandfather got DWIs" or something and nod at yourself approvingly. Caste and Clique are inherited. and the whole thing veers into a totally different Lane based on a few automobile purchases whose consequences reverberate for decades. and my question, again, is why is this bad? Scumbags failing constantly is better for GDP somehow than raising taxes and building Rail imho.

The best part is because she drives such a nice car we never have to give her our car to drive the kids places. I just bought her a car seat and reimburse for gas.

I have a friend who drives a BMW SUV and legitimately it is his entire personality. Obsesses over the engine and the 0-60. Talks about it non-stop. Meanwhile, he has to street park it (doesn't own a home), is paying $800+ a month for five years, and $500 a month in insurance.

A few years ago, within the course of about 2 months, my assistant bought a new 3 series and my paralegal bought a lightly used Merc SUV at 12% interest. They've both since been fired and I'm driving the same Camry I had then. It's insane what people do. The assistant was young and had some help from Daddy but my paralegal was broke. I tried to talk to her but she bought that piece of shit anyway. Total waste.

While I fully support not buying luxury badges -- LJL at driving compact sedans like an Altima. You will die in any car crash with a F150 and you have to assume some drunk in an F150 will hit you since this is TTT America. Never, ever, drive a small car.

Nissan Sentra is the compact. Nissan Altima is the midsize. It's the same class as Camry/Accord. $30,000 car in this economy.

I put 120k miles on the Stinger before I got rid of it. It was really a very pleasant experience. I never had serious issues with the car despite all the bad things you hear about Kia transmissions in particular. The interior was starting to go to shit when I replaced it and that was the biggest thing I could complain about.

Angelica Akins, 32, works late-night shifts as a certified nursing assistant while raising five children. Early last year, the engine of her 2011 Chevrolet Equinox died. Without enough savings or the credit score that dealerships required, she put off buying a car and temporarily turned to ride-hailing services to get to work.

The rides cost her around $1,000 a month, with her commute taking about two hours round-trip from her apartment in Grand Rapids, Mich., to her job in Saginaw. Ms. Akins picked up extra shifts to keep up with her expenses while saving for a car. But the daily Uber costs added up, and she managed to save only about $2,500 — less than half of what she desired.

“You never know how important things are until you lose them,” she said.

Ms. Akins recently moved back in with her mother, leaving the neighborhood and home she loved to cut back on her $1,400 monthly rent and shorten her commute to 30 minutes, making it easier to share rides in her mother’s car or find cheaper trips.

Her: 32. A fucking CNA (like the entry level of nursing). FIVE. CHILDREN.

Chinese cars are better than our cars now and cost half as much. The solution is to open the market to them and watch the US car industry implode while prices drop 50% or more.

I'm not against blaming proles but most of America doesn't have good public transit. Too many people need some form of transportation and cars are too expensive relative to incomes.

Yeah, but 95% of the time the problem is that the proles buy a $40k+ car instead of a $5,000 car that is functionally equivalent.

This is true. These days you need $12,000 minimum for a complete beater. A good value buy will be in the low to mid 20s, and 3-4 years old.

Yes, and do note that proles end up paying way more per month, averaged out, than the cost of the vehicle would suggest. Financing costs due to poor or lack of credit are higher, maintenance costs are higher, insurance costs are higher in the ghetto, etc.

that's a vehicle that has been in an accident and is likely very unreliable.

You're using old boomer logic from back when cars were unreliable as fuck and rarely made it past 100k miles, and didn't make it to 50 if you didn't maintain properly.

Cars from the past 15 years all easily hit 200k even with shitty maintenance. Even the shitty ones.

Plenty of $15k and below cars out there. Not even total pieces of shit. Countless used CR-Vs and Camrys with 150k miles that have plenty of life left out there. People just want a "new car" because they "deserve it."

car inflation in both the used and new market has been huge over the last 5 years. the point isn't that you can't buy a used car. it's that you can't buy a used car CHEAPLY.

in the 90s and 2000s, it was very easy to get a 5-7 year old vehicle for $3000 that would serve a high school kid, college student, grad student, or someone in their first job very well for a 2-4 years. you could buy one with savings from a summer of fast food work or as a lifeguard or SAT tutoring. that's not possible any more
