If you asked me to describe the rising philosophy of the day, I’d say it is data-ism. We now have the ability to gather huge amounts of data. This ability seems to carry with it certain cultural assumptions — that everything that can be measured should be measured; that data is a transparent and reliable lens that allows us to filter out emotionalism and ideology; that data will help us do remarkable things

boards use SQL because they are old, it's easy and straightforward, and works very well on the scale 99.8% of them operate on. XO is just crufty old code written by an 18 year old in 2003.
but for search specifically, elasticsearch and other tools (I dunno what people use these days) were faster because they build indexes specifically geared to searching text, not relational data lookup. and the querying language was infinitely better as well
many sites used to use both (have everything in SQL and push all the posts to elasticsearch/lucene indexes or something similar for post queries), but again I'm pretty out of the loop even though I'm a shitcoder for a living. From what I can tell postgres has nearly evolved into a magic bullet as it's added a ton of nosql features/performance improvements over the past decade
