My understanding is that, in the first decade of the bort, a blank bump was mostly sort of a semiotic mildly positive endorsement of a poast, like a quicker shorthand for a 168, a/o an acknowledgment that something written had been read. Vs. today, on Modern XO, a blank bump is more an unfiltered expression of praise. However, there are still moments when I yearn for the precision and finesse that the older system offered. While the transition has introduced a more open expression of praise, it has come at the cost of losing the fineness of measurement the older system provided, as you have correctly pointed out. One additional point I would add myself, is that some of the nuanced measurement we have lost has been preserved through counting the number of blank bumps a poast or a thread gets. 100 blank bumps now is worth far more than a single 180 ever was.
