i didn't put very much thought into my college applications. none of my peers did. i got a really high score on the PSAT so a bunch of schools sent me stuff saying i should apply including a couple ivies which i applied to and got into. i remember being a bit uncertain about it, because it seemed like a good opportunity, but my dad went to an ivy and i couldn't shake the memories of him telling me about how much he genuinely disliked the people there. he was never a very emotional guy and the vividness and intensity of his recollections really stuck with me
people who grew up in the east coast striver system, especially asians and jews, just do not understand how little everyone else in the country (whites) cares or even thinks about academic tryharding. i get the impression that it's a bit different now because The Matrix means that this awareness has spread to a larger footprint than it used to, but i still doubt people care all that much, especially now that it's basically impossible for white people to get into ivies
the vivek ramaswamy mask-off moment about this over the holidays last year really captured this disconnect very well imo. the striver credentialist PMC class of people genuinely has no idea that the rest of the country just does not give a shit at all about this stuff and does not place any value on it. the trump admin going after harvard is probably going to end up as one of the most popular things that they do, regardless of if it's done competently or effectively or not. americans really, really hate these people |
