A popular gay bar in Jersey City is facing backlash after a trivia team named itself after the group alleged to have committed a gang rape at Cornell University and won “best team name.”
A team at Pint’s weekly Wednesday night trivia named itself “Cornell 7 inches”, according to a social media post.
“I cannot believe someone would make light of something like this, and there were two teams of women there. And as if that’s not bad enough, later on the host was announcing their score thus far and said ‘name is a little uncomfortable… but voted best name!’ a commenter wrote.
They added that “safe to say we are not going again.”
“When we came into work today, we found out that last night, without our knowledge, our trivia host awarded ‘best team name’ to a team that had a truly offensive name, a name that violates both how we want to treat our community and the standards we have for our business,” Wolf Sterling, the founder and owner of Pint, said in a video posted to social media Thursday.
Pint has fired the trivia host and is donating all of the money the bar made Wednesday night to sexual violence prevention programs, Sterling said.
“This kind of behavior has no place in Jersey City. I strongly condemn sexual assault and those who would treat it as a joke,” Ward E Councilwoman Eleana Little, whose ward includes Pint, said in a statement to NJ.com.
“It’s good to hear that the owners of Pint took swift action after learning of this incident. Accountability matters,” Little added.
Pint is a small gay bar in downtown Jersey City, just blocks from city hall, with a long history. It has been in continuous operation as a bar since 1911. Once known as Star Bar, it was renamed Pint in the early 2010s and became a staple of the Jersey City LGBTQ+ scene, known for its extensive draft beer selection.
it's the trivia/word game category that "Cornell 7 inches" fits into. "Ice Spice Girls", "Constance Wu Tang Clan", "Roman Empire State of Mind"... etc.
