Yes — medium-to-dark brown skin has a real biological advantage in sunny environments, particularly in protection against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. But there isn't one universally ideal skin color; it depends on the environment and evolutionary trade-offs.
Why brown skin is advantageous in strong sunlight
1. Better protection against UV radiation
Melanin absorbs and scatters UV radiation, helping protect skin cells from DNA damage. Darker skin generally has a much higher level of natural UV protection than lighter skin.
2. Lower risk of sunburn and skin damage
Darker skin burns less readily and generally has lower rates of several UV-related skin cancers. However, skin cancer can still occur, and it can be diagnosed later in people with darker skin.
3. Protection of folate
UV radiation can degrade folate, a vitamin important for DNA synthesis, cell division and fetal development. Melanin may help preserve folate in high-UV environments.
