Let's say I just wanna either sleep under a bridge or built a tiny hidden shack way in the woods

Then eat fast food while chilling at the library or 24/7 gym all of the time

100k should probably be more than enough for 50+ years in pretty much any city/country/town

Right?

Yeah if you get food stamps and eat at soup kitchens and shower at the gym you can probably make it on less than 100K for 50 years. Or just plan killself after like 20 years.

budget 5K for a used Toyota Sienna. 'van living' is a major QOL upgrade from literal 'under the bridge' level homelessness imo.

you're going to have a lot less to worry about w/r/t police harassment (and about 10,000 other potentially deadly homeless person exigencies) sleeping in a van than under a bridge. the police prefer people being out of sight in a vehicle. living as a full-on homeless person sleeping in a field or something, your life expectancy is about 2 years.

I'd put the "I can basically disappear from normal economic life and probably never need to beg/work again" number closer to $250k–$350k, assuming you're willing to live incredibly cheaply.

I think it's around 350 to 400k

It really depends if you can pull public benefits or not in whatever state you're in. Free medical insurance in the states that offer it is huge

I've mathed this out myself separately and that's what I came up with

It does not account for inflation though and so it assumes that one has their money in assets that at least keep pace with inflation

So what, he is spending like 10K per year on food for 50 years? He's not living 50 more years under a bridge.

is that $100k adjusted for inflation? you could probably get by on the streets for $100k over the next few years, but i’d worry about trying to make that nominal amount work a decade out, nevermind 50 years.
