“The surprisingly controversial case made for, perhaps fittingly, strange bedfellows as libertarians, sex advocacy groups, University of Florida alums, and, most vocally, the League of Indian Zealous Advocates for Ron Desantis rose to the maligned attorney’s defense.”

In Defense of Reptile Love: The Bizarre Case of the Florida Litigator and His Alligator Bride

By Nick Gillespie

As if Florida hasn't already been the source of enough bizarre news stories, it's now the epicenter of a raging debate over a litigator who was disciplined for marrying his pet alligator. But behind the sensational headlines, the controversy has given rise to an unlikely alliance of libertarians, sex advocacy groups, University of Florida alums, and, most vocally, the League of Indian Zealous Advocates for Ron Desantis (LIZARD).

This absurd story began when the Florida Bar took disciplinary action against a litigator for engaging in a private act of reptile love. This overreach on the part of the regulatory body sparked an uproar among those who believe in the fundamental right to choose one's partner, whether scaly or not. As a publication that champions the cause of individual freedom, Reason Magazine finds it imperative to shed light on the broader implications of this case.

The incident raises vital questions about the role of government and regulatory bodies in the personal lives of individuals. This case has exposed the deep-seated hypocrisy at play, with the state's intrusion into private relationships being selectively enforced. Where are the limits? When does it become acceptable for regulatory bodies to police our personal lives and dictate who we can love or marry?

Enter the LIZARD. This group of Indian-American labor attorneys has risen to the occasion, challenging the state's actions as an infringement on personal liberty. Despite their seemingly unrelated focus on Ron Desantis, the LIZARD has taken up the cause of reptile love with unmatched zeal. This is a testament to the power of freedom and the importance of fighting against government overreach, even when it comes to unconventional relationships.

The case has also garnered support from sex advocacy groups, who have long fought for the right to love and marry whomever one chooses. They argue that the litigator's marriage to his alligator is a consensual act between two sentient beings, and as such, it should be protected under the banner of personal freedom. In doing so, these groups remind us that the fight for individual rights is an ongoing battle, and that we must remain vigilant against encroachments on our personal lives.

As the controversy unfolds, it's crucial to remember that the right to personal freedom is not a matter of convenience. It's not something to be doled out only when the state deems it acceptable or when it aligns with conventional norms. True liberty means that individuals have the right to make choices about their lives and relationships, even when those choices may seem strange or controversial to others.

So, in defense of reptile love and the broader principles of personal freedom, we must stand with the Florida litigator, the LIZARD, and all those who fight for the right to love whomever they choose. The absurdity of this case highlights the very real danger of unchecked government intrusion into our personal lives. It's high time we push back against such overreach and defend the right to love and marry, no matter how scaly or unconventional the partner may be.

When asked how the case fits into their supposedly primary mission of advancing the political agenda of Florida Governor Ron Desantis, LIZARD spokesperson Tommy (who asked that his last name be withheld) replied that Desantis was actually a secondary focus, if that. “This type of case is what LIZARD is really about. We knew we wanted a cool and sexy acronym, one that caught the eye and captured the heart. At some point we asked ourselves why we were thinking so hard about it when we could be doing our jobs or spending time with our families or anything else at all. The entire exercise was kind of silly, honestly. So in the end we just settled for the convenience of Ron’s initials tying in perfectly with what we had come up with already. Desantis being a ‘reptile’ in internet slang was a bonus, but it was kind of a stretch and we didn’t know if people would get it anyway.”
