I think the number 6 million was inflated, but a shitload of Jews were murdered. But also a shitload of other people. When I visited Auschwitz, I felt pretty ignorant when I learned how many Poles had been sent there first.

Those familiar with Jewish tradition might recall the census of 600,000 for the revelation at Sinai. The multiple of 6 may have been chosen for rhetorical purposes.

Millions were killed. Probably north of 4 at a minimum. The actual number is impossible to know, and immaterial.

With their Soviet Union Jews killed about 30m people beyond typical war casualties. In addition millions of German refugees from the East were killed in 1945-47.
