i have read it 3 times, so your poast is untrue.
i had a survey class on the epic in college. we read the iliad, the odyssey, the aeneid, don quixote, ulysses (joyce), and some poem called omeros by a negroid poet.
i'd read it once before that for pleasure, and i read it once since then.

The Iliad is a redacted and edited performance text by an oral poet (Homer) consisting of a couple dozen of his most popular Homeric cinematic universe (Epic Cycle) set pieces. It was likely commissioned by an extremely rich/tyrannical fan who wanted other poets to be able to perform the pieces on demand. They used the newest tech for it: writing.
The Odyssey on the other hand was a written composition from the start by an Iliad fan-boy.
