That's the power of using song, meter and rhyme to preserve oral tradition. It's also a form of error-checking that prevents anyone from tampering with the lyrics. That's why Homer was preserved during the 400 years Greek people went without writing. |

It was likely commissioned by an extremely rich/tyrannical fan who wanted other poets to be able to perform the pieces on demand. They used the newest tech for it: writing.
The Odyssey on the other hand was a written composition from the start by an Iliad fan-boy. |

That way people who didn’t even understand it could still memorize it just like people memorize songs they don’t know the meanings to.
