Law360 (November 14, 2025, 4:15 PM EST) -- Convicted fraudster Eliyahu "Eli" Weinstein was sentenced to 37 years in federal prison on Friday for orchestrating a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme that began as the "ink dried" on a presidential commutation signed by Donald Trump at the end of his first presidential term.
Weinstein was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael A. Shipp in New Jersey federal court alongside his second-in-command and, according to the judge, the "driving force behind the scheme," Aryeh Bromberg. Bromberg received a 12-year sentence.
Judge Shipp said Weinstein squandered a gift only few have received when handing down the sentence.
"The court is appalled by such brazen actions," Judge Shipp said, adding that Weinstein, 51, is "a predator that stole investors life savings" and that he may be the exception to data that suggests recidivism sharply declines once an offender turns 65 years old.
Five victims, identified by only their initials, told the court of the impact Weinstein and Bromberg's scheme had on them and their families. One, a single mother who invested $400,000, said she went from being financially stable to going back to work in a restaurant in order to recoup what represented her retirement and children's education funds.
Bromberg and Weinstein began committing crimes "when the ink was barely dry" on Weinstein's commutation, prosecutor Mark J. Pesce said on Friday. Weinstein allegedly immersed himself in the scheme while serving three years of supervised release after Trump commuted his 24-year prison sentence to time served — less than eight years — in 2021.
