‘No social contagion here!‘ commentator jokes
Almost every student at Mount Holyoke College is LGBT, according to new data from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.
The free speech group recently released its annual college rankings. As part of the dataset, FIRE asked students for their sexual orientation.
“New survey of 62,000+ students at 250+ campuses finds 21% of undergrads identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or queer/questioning,” an account called “The Missing Data Depot” reported, based on the survey results. Its run by Kevin Wallsten, a California State University Long Beach political scientist and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute.
“There is, however, wide variation across schools, w/ only 4% identifying as LGBQ at Wake Forest but 86% identifying as LGBQ at Mount Holyoke,” the Data Depot account wrote.
Though billed as a “women’s college,” Mount Holyoke lets gender-confused individuals attend. “We welcome a gender diverse population, with students from across the country and all around the world,” the college explains. “Most importantly, we recognize all identities as multidimensional, intersectional — and we explore that fact in class, in community, in our cultural centers and in our residence halls.”
Commentators pointed out that this is further proof that LGBT identification is a “social contagion.”
“No social contagion here,” Wesley Yang wrote.
“The vast majority of all people in all times were actually some variety of ‘Queer’ but in hiding because of violent patriarchal norms. Didn’t you know,” he wrote sarcastically.
“What’s documented here is the susceptibility of children to trends, and that the trend is hostility toward heterosexuality, which can only be practiced in the breach, as a form of hypocrisy,” he wrote in a second post.
“Elite liberal arts colleges – who would have guessed?” Miranda Devine wrote.
“I have a hunch Mount Holyoke will not face the issue of reducing legacy admissions any time soon,” Carlo Lancellotti wrote.
The College Fix has previously covered the apparent explosion in gender confusion and homosexuality among college students, particularly at elite colleges. In 2022, a report found almost 40 percent of students identify as LGBTQ at liberal arts colleges.
Social scientist Eric Kaufmann has linked the rise to social pressure. He points out that while identification is higher, sexual activity has not increased at the same rate.
“LGBT behavior is up 4 points among young people since 2008, but LGBT identity is up 11 points,” he told The Fix in 2022. “Among women, only around a fifth of bisexuals in 2008-10 said they only slept with men in the past 5 years. That share has risen steadily, so that it is now the case that the majority of female bisexuals only sleep with men.”
“If this was about people feeling able to come out, then we should have seen these two trends rise together,” he said. “What we find instead is that identity is rising much faster than behavior, indicating that people with occasional rather than sustained feelings of attraction to the opposite sex are increasingly identifying as LGBT.”
