I have $401,559.01 (LOL wow I have $401K in my 401k) in this account and $48,142.04 in an IRA (up 3%).

(Not much other savings, though, since I'm a reckless spender and don't do any investment outside of the retirement funds.)

low risk and it's managed? seems really dumb ngl. just put it in VOO to avoid big expense ratios. or is that because you don't have the option to?

not a bad plan but he's right. managed means they take out fees. VOO is ultra low fees and matches the US economy 1:1, which always goes up over time since its inception. Probably a better move to not be paying some douche to click to buy VOO for you.

honestly it wasn't a bad move. and in your case, you're not super interested in the stock market, it's not bad at all.

between changing your investment strategy and changing your spending habits, you would be a millionaire by now if you changed your spending habits. if you changed your investment strategy you'd maybe make a little bit more than you have but not much. so probably fine in the grand scheme.

Maybe if you're feeling greedy they might have a more aggressive trading strategy you could switch to. Maybe go from low risk to moderate. To be frank, the US economy is like an unstoppable freight train of greatness. Despite what people say in the media and all the negativity, the naysayers, the one thing America is an absolute genius at is capitalism. With my money, substantially less than yours, I bet on American corporations to find new ways to grow their businesses. The odds of me being wrong in the long run are almost zero.

This is a typical hedge fund set up, called a long-short strategy. You're long on equities, short on the market (small percentage), and you have bonds that mitigate risk. This strategy captures the 'beta' of your equities which means it captures the growth of stocks independent of market volatility, i.e., it says you're confident that the companies you're invested in will come up with new ways to make money that don't have to do with the overall economy growing (such as growing population and macroeconomic trends).

I invite you to get a second opinion on this because I can't rubber stamp what I'm saying with a high degree of confidence, so compare notes with someone else before taking any action.

There is a way to change your life. You just have to admit to yourself that you are very prone to coming up with imaginative scenarios that are not tied to reality and then believing in them with strong conviction.

I've told this story a few times but during Covid I shorted the market because I began believing a bunch of nonsense. I convinced myself of a bunch of market analysis that simply was not true and I went through what you're going through.

All you can do is shrug your shoulders and admit to being wrong and try and move on. Look, a lot of people are surprised at how quickly the market roared back. I thought this would happen over a longer period of time, but not in two weeks. But that's the magic of the invisible hand that guides markets. It's not Jews or a conspiracy. It's the sum total of investors. It's the general public weighing in and saying we actually believe in the profitability and growth of American corporations. Once the veil was lifted on the fake Iran War economic crisis, people realized woah this stuff is all a lot more valuable than I thought. And once one person believed it, a hundred more did and then a a thousand and so forth. And that's really what happened. The Iran War panic was determined to be a nothingburher. Hence S&P ATH.

The People have spoken fren. I have investments in things I neither like nor understand. I own them because other people like them. I own stuff I would never use. But it means something to somebody. That's the ugly truth about stocks. It may not be worth ATH to you. But that's what it's worth to someone willing to pay for it. This is a fundamental reality you must accept.
