My junkie mom and her husband are close friends with the lead singer of modest mouse. He has a big loft in downtown Portland. I guess he has a pool table that has stacks of hundred dollar bills on it. He'll grab one on his way out the door. He buys people booze but only does heroin himself. I met him once. He seemed incredibly dumb. Laughed at really immature fart type jokes.

that was surprising at the very least. MM was past their peak and johnny was pretty old already. i heard recently that marr didnt know them at all and just got a random phone call one day.

they made a good(not great) album together though. better than almost everything else marr's done post smiths imo

marr's career is confounding. the guy is a truly amazing guitarist and songwriter, at least judging by the smiths' output. and beyond his "side gig" with bernard sumner in electronic, he hasn't done anything worth a shit, certainly not anything even in the same neighborhood as the smiths.

i guess him and that fag morrissey were just a magical duo (not taking anything away from the rhythm section, which was also phenomenal).

there was such an avalanche of so much indie music of high technical/production/songwriting quality coming out back then that it became 'worthless' in a sense.

sort of like how 2020s NBA seems kind of lame because teams 'cracked the code' and even mediocre players are basically stronger/more athletic than peak Michael Jordan. it devalues the product somehow.

i remember listening to my hipster GF's indie ipod and it was like 10000 songs that were all sort of 'better' than anything that came out of 80s/90s indie, but also sort of interchangeable and boring as a result.

“Indie” is too broad of a label. At this point it’s basically meaning any non-classical/country/screamo music by white people with real instruments between 2000 and 2020.

But in no specific order I would say:

death cab/postal service, modest mouse, bloc party, foals, arcade fire, interpol, silversun pickups, band of horses, war on drugs, beach house, the XX, Bombay bicycle club, the national, two door cinema club, Franz Ferdinand, grizzly bear, local natives, lcd soundsystem, future islands, phoenix, yeah yeah yeahs, fleet foxes, empire of the Sun, m83, Arctic monkeys, the strokes, cage the elephant, tame impala, metric, vampire weekend. There are a few more.

Picking a best is impossible - how do you compare silversun pickups to beach house?

Im leaving the killers, white stripes, keane and muse off this list. They are rock bands but very far away from what someone would consider “indie” if you listened to the rest of the list.

indie is a shitty term because it originates from a business model but has been transformed into an aesthetic. under the former, white stripes are as indie as it gets. but to most people now indie means you have a beard, a short brim hat, tattoos, and folk instruments.

So what? Talking about how indie used to mean “independent” is like saying Netflix isn’t “tv” if you watch it on a laptop or something. Terms change. I don’t even think the “independent” phrase really had much value at the start anyways. Who cares if a band has signed with a label? Meaningless for listeners.

I don’t think many people’s mind jumps to Mumford and sons or the lumineers when they hear “indie” either - folk music and brim hats are just that - folk music. I think my list is pretty fair. It basically means electic rock music with emo undertones. More of a vibe than anything.

This thread is unearthing long lost memories and playlists and albums long forgotten from college

Take me back, take me back to seeing death cab and broken social scene in small venues and following random blogspot blogs to catch new music and seeing what your friends were listening to on last.fm and stealing music from people’s iTunes on the library WiFi

Are you old enough to have listened to college radio? That’s how I learned about new music back then.

I agree with a lot of the suggestions ITT. I'd add The Mountain Goats to the list of contenders, too.

Lot of good stuff itt although there’s some of the inevitable attempts to out-indie other people. I like Beach House, too, but to put them in the same importance conversation as Arcade Fire or the White Stripes, etc. is laughable.

For endurance, I think it’s The National and Arcade Fire. Still both touring and have listenable music, and it’s not gimmicky or wildly different than what they were playing 15-20 years ago.

This thread confirms that many of us are 38-44.
